Carl Andre and Ana Mendieta met in the late 1970s, soon after Mendieta arrived in New York, introduced by artist Nancy Spero. Radically different in terms of both personality and artistic practice—she intensely visceral, he strictly methodical—the two were immediately attracted to one another. Having received a prestigious American Academy residency, in 1983 Mendieta moved to Rome, where the imagery for Pietre/Foglie was made and the portfolio was published by Edizione R. R. Bulla. Rome, which Mendieta described as a cross between her native Cuba and New York, held special sentimental value for the couple, as they were married there in January 1985. Only months after their wedding, which coincided with the presentation of Pietre/Foglie portfolio at AAM Gallery in Rome, Mendieta’s tragic (and controversial) death ended their tumultuous creative and romantic partnership.
