Commentary

In 1938, the Addison presented the first retrospective exhibition in New England to focus on the careers of sibling artists Maurice and Charles Prendergast. Working in close collaboration with Charles Prendergast and his wife Eugénie, exhibition curator Charles H. Sawyer would later\tell Charles that this show was “one of the most satisfying exhibitions that we have ever had at the Addison Gallery.” These warm sentiments were apparently mutual, as Eugénie Prendergast became an enduring friend of the Addison. In recognition of the role that the institution had played in showing and collecting the work of her brother-in-law and husband, Mrs. Prendergast donated eleven works between
the years of 1968 and 1989. With some thirty-five works, the Addison holds one of the most significant institutional collections of the Prendergast brothers in the world.
