Commentary

Introduced to European modernism during trips to Paris in 1912 and 1914, Blanche Lazzell returned there in the early 1920s for intensive studies with cubists Albert Gleizes, Fernand Léger, and André Lhote. Often working in graphite, Lazzell created series of drawings in which she deployed flat, overlapping, and patterned forms in an exploration of spatial depth. Her use of monochrome and decoration—the silver-gray of her pencil—heightens the interplay and alternation of the shifting planes.
