Commentary

Arthur Leipzig enrolled in courses at the New York Photo League in Manhattan in 1941, where he studied under Sid Grossman. From the 1940s to the 1960s, Leipzig frequently photographed children playing in the streets of New York. Inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Children’s Games (1560), his photograph shows a group of children who have made the street their playground. Between parked cars, they draw chalk outlines of flags and sailboats, and play rounds of tic-tac-toe on the asphalt.

Born in 1918, Leipzig created a vibrant record of mid-century New York, alongside his peers Helen Levitt and Roy DeCarava. He also served, for twenty-eight years, as a photography professor at Long Island University.
