Monk
Trading Ship of Early 1800s

Built at Nobleborough, Maine, 1805
Length 88 ft. 6 in.; Beam 26 ft.; Depth 13 ft.; Tonnage 253 tons

The Monk was one of the countless small ships that carried American commerce to all parts of the world in the early nineteenth century. She was owned by William Orne of Salem and made many voyages between Salem and Mediterranean ports until 1812 when she was captured by a British war ship only a few miles from her home port.
