Commentary

Photographer Oliver H. Willard was commissioned by Quartermaster
General M.C. Miegs to document and commemorate the variety of
uniforms made at the Schuylkill Armory in Philadelphia for the United
States Union Army. Depicting the full range of uniforms, they were
categorized into the following groups: Ordinance & Quartermaster,
Cavalry, Infantry, Artillery, Miscellaneous Uniforms, Engineer, and Light
Artillery. In 1866 Willard produced a two-volume bound set of forty-five
hand-colored albumen prints.
