Commentary

Executed in former Addison director Adam Weinberg’s office, Endless Spring is made of paper cups from the gallery’s watercooler. Tony Feher, who was in residence at the Addison in 1999, considered “any collection of materials ripe for making a sculpture.” Endless Spring evokes Constantin Brancusi’s famous sculpture, Endless Column (1918), which, in Feher’s view, had been referred to excessively by artists “in an attempt for historical legitimacy.”

Reflecting on Endless Spring, Feher noted his objection to the commodification of natural resources for capital gain, seeing buyers of bottled water as ceding to corporate control. As with most conceptual art, this leaning tower of cups presents an idea that is as important as the object itself, if not more so.
