Commentary

Effortlessly crossing the line between fine art and design, Andrea Zittel’s projects—whether paintings, drawings, sculpture, installations, or weavings—explore multiple ways in which objects can reflect everyday contemporary living. For the past 15 years, Zittel has been based in the Californian desert, intentionally removed from major hubs of the art world, where her house and studio alike have become sites of experimentation. “Every space that I’ve lived in, I’ve turned into an art project,” she explains. The ‘experimental’—both as a way of living and thinking, and as an aesthetic quality—is a key element in Zittel’s practice. Part of a small series of gouaches, A-Z Homestead Units documents the artist’s installation project by the same name, in which she constructed a series of compact, portable dwelling structures that strike an equilibrium between comfort and frugality, and address integral aspects of living such as privacy and mobility.
