Commentary

Between 1870 and 1910, Winslow Homer frequently traveled to the Adirondack mountains, where the environment provided rich subject matter for his engravings and paintings. Published in Harper’s Weekly on November 7, 1874, Camping Out in the Adirondack Mountains depicts two local men Mike Flynn (left) and Rufus Wallace (right), who Homer hired as guides for his Adirondacks explorations. Homer made several engravings of the guides hunting, fishing, and trekking through the woods. But here they are show in a moment of relaxation, gathered around a dwindling campfire. The dog grazing behind the lean-to is also featured in several paintings including the recently acquired Untitled (1894) and the Addison’s Dog on a Log (1889).
