Commentary

Pictorialism, an international photography movement, emerged in the late 19th century. Its practitioners, who often congregated in camera clubs in cities such as London, Paris and New York, sought to distinguish themselves from the amateurs who emerged after the invention of the Kodak snapshot camera in 1888. Arguing against received opinion, pictorialists contended that photography could be a medium for artistic expression.
To elevate their images to the status of fine art, pictorialist photographers like the husband and wife team of George and Hebe Hollister employed a soft-focus effect and used alternative photographic processes like gum bichromate, which created a hand-manipulated and unique artistic print. Many pictorialists focused on natural and bucolic landscapes, which were also a popular subject matter for symbolist and tonalist painters of the day.
