Sol Lewitt and Math, Robert S. Frost Elementary School, Lawrence, MA

Students in Christine Jee’s 4th grade classes prepared for their state-wide mathematics testing by learning about and making wall drawings by artist Sol Lewitt. The Addison Gallery education department worked with students to discuss the connections between Sol Lewitt’s artwork and their geometry curriculum. Students made connections between LeWitt’s conceptual art and their study of angles, lines, shapes, and formulas. They executed a total of three Lewitt drawings while mastering their math skills for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test.

Addison Gallery educators visited Ms. Jee’s fourth grade where they explored the artwork and wall drawings of Sol Lewitt. Students discussed the types of shapes, angles, and lines they were observing in Lewitt’s work and documented vocabulary words that their math curriculum and Sol LeWitt’s drawings have in common.

Students tried their hands at making Sol Lewitt-inspired geometric drawings before taking on the task of executing Lewitt’s drawings in full scale.

Students studied, planned, and executed Sol Lewitt’s instructions for drawings.

Completed drawings were displayed in the Robert Frost School hallways and classrooms, along with student documentation and credit lines to the artists.
