Museum Learning Center Open During Final Phase of Addison Renovations

The Museum Learning Center remains open for school groups and scheduled programs during the Addison’s closure for the final phase of the construction. Please check the Public Programs page for up-to-date information or contact the education department to schedule class visits.

During the current closure, access to the MLC is through the Elson Art Center on Chapel Avenue, located just behind the Addison. A wheelchair-accessible entrance is located through the metal screen door by the Addison loading dock.

The Addison’s Museum Learning Center, located in the new Sidney R. Knafel Wing, is a flexible space designed to accommodate the wide variety of museum-based programs offered by the Addison, from education outreach programs for students in grades preschool through 12 to lectures for the public and private visits.

Through the Museum Learning Center, the Addison’s entire collection of almost 17,000 objects is available for study. As a result, classroom visits can be tailored to respond directly to the curriculum. For example, a history class studying the Civil War will have full access to the Addison’s collection of Civil War photographs and drawings, while an art class studying portraiture might ask to see a selection of the Addison’s portraits in a variety of media. The Education Department offers several portfolios to give educators a starting point to planning a visit and to suggest some of the myriad ways in which the collection can be used.

The MLC also offers more ready access to the collection to scholars and members of the general public who would like to view specific works of art by appointment.

The Museum Learning Center Library offers nearly 5,500 volumes relating to American art and artists, and is accessible online via the Noble Library Network catalogue. An Educators and Families Library contains books selected especially for children, parents, and educators on art, artists, creativity, collecting, and museums.
