Playing to Our Strengths: Highlights from the Permanent Collection (January 29–July 31, 2025) explores American art in three sections: masterworks by Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer, whose works captured the aspirations and apprehensions of a nation coming into its own; American modernist paintings that convey the ingenuity of artists working amidst the tumult of the interwar years; and color field painters, who deemphasized gesture and active brushstrokes to distill the vocabulary of painting to its very essence.
